{UAH} Mbarara: Residents Boycott NRM LC1 Elections
The overall voter turn up was very low while in other villages incumbents were declaredunopposed.
Residents of Rwampara Mbarara refused to elect LC leaders for the ruling NRM party, accusing government of neglecting its duties in the area.
The party members at the village level yesterday took part in electing the LC1 interest group leaders, an exercise that was postponed from last Friday due to insufficient funds.
Earlier on August 28th, residents of Kichwamba in Rwampara; armed with farm implements vowed to boycott all elections, saying service delivery in their sub county was hitting new lows and that none ofthe promises made by their elected leaders had been fulfilled.
True to their word, as the rest of the party supporters around the country poured to polling stations, the Rwampara residents stayed put and shunned the poll.
They further said that they would not stop at the LC 1 elections but each one of the coming polls including next year's general elections.
Residents are distraught that huge sums of money are being used to beautify Mbarara Municipality, — which was recently granted city status – at the expense of the people in the rural areas.
Sources told us in most of the villages, the voter turn up was very low while in several others the incumbents were declared unopposed.
Some of the Chairpersons who were supposed to be voted in the area supported the boycott saying that people are right since they only stop at voting and nothing is provided to them.
Chairman LC1, Kitojo village, Francis Tugume told chimp corps that residents were angry with leaders who did not help them receive their compensation from a rural electrification program which displaced several of them.
