{UAH} NRM poll officials in Arua reject party cash

Arua- A total of 28 NRM polling officials who participated in the just concluded grassroots party elections in Arua District have rejected the Shs5,000 given to them as allowance for the day's work.

Others have also threatened to join aspiring presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi's camp, saying the party was undermining their efforts by giving them what is not commensurate with the work done.

Mr Bernard Anguyo from Old Bus Park Cell in Arua Hill Division, said: "In a letter signed by the party secretary general, Ms Kasule Lumumba, we were entitled to lunch.

But they are only giving us an allowance of Shs5,000 as if they don't know that it can't buy anything with this inflation."

Another official, Mr Emmanuel Etumbu, said joining Mr Mbabazi's camp is the next option.

"If this is how they are going to handle businesses even before the real primary election, then joining Mr Mbabazi's camp would be the solution to this confusion," Mr Etumbu said on Tuesday.

However, the NRM district administrative officer, Mr Swaib Akifo, said on Tuesday that complaints of the polling officials were unfounded.

"The Shs5,000 they are complaining about is what is supposed to be for the actual primary elections but not these village elections," he said.

Mr Akifo also said there were three categories of election officials; those at the sub-county who receive Shs50,000 each and those at parish and village levels who take Shs20,000 and Shs5,000 respectively.
