Old guard should give way to youth - Rwabwogo - National
MASINDI. President Museveni's son-in-law Odrek Rwabwogo has rallied NRM party leaders from Bunyoro sub-region, the home area of his rival Matayo Kyaligonza, to back his candidature for the position of NRM vice chairman for western region.
Mr Rwabwogo, who hails from Kinoni Sub-county in Kiruhura District, is competing with incumbent Maj Gen Kyaligonza, who hails from Buhimba Sub-county in Hoima District and Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Kahinda Otafiire.
While meeting more than 200 political leaders, including NRM delegates from Masindi, Hoima, Kiryandongo and Buliisa districts in Masindi Town at the weekend, Mr Rwabwogo said NRM is still unpopular among the common man and the party ideals are not well entrenched.
He said the old generation should give way to the youth.
"God-willing, when we go through the election, I think that a district chairman of the party should at least once in a year call up young people, put them in a room like this call Odrek and ask him, tell us what it means to start a business, how you raise capital, how taxes affect you," Mr Rwabwogo, a businessman, said.
He advised leaders on how they can help people generate household income through commercial agriculture and wealth management.
The former MP for Buliisa constituency, Mr Jonathan Nyendwoha Mutiti, encouraged Mr Rwabwogo not to be intimidated by anybody in the race.
The Kiryandongo District NRM chairman, Mr Fred Balikwa, said communication in NRM has been very poor and was optimistic that Mr Rwabwogo would solve it.
Show support
"The strategies you (Rwabwogo) have put across will help us so much to build the party and in particular about the communication system," he said.
The speaker of Hoima District council, Mr Nathan Kitwe Isingoma, said: "We have decided to support Rwabwogo not looking at who comes from where but we want the ideology and the quality of service."
The Masindi District Council speaker, Mr Ronald Businge, said he would support Mr Rwabwogo because of "his good ideas".
Mr Businge added that NRM party has a problem of blackmail, especially the contenders who have strong opponents.
"Avoid people who are coming to blackmail others, those who cannot manage competition we are going to say you had better go home and rest," he said.
