Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has described as "inconsequential'', the decision of majority of The Democratic Alliance (TDA) members to endorse former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi as their presidential candidate following collapse of TDA cooperation to field a joint candidate for 2016 presidential elections.

Initially the TDA sought to field one candidate to represent the Opposition in the 2016 general election but failed to reach consensus on who should be the candidate. The joint candidate race remained Between Kizza Besigye and Mbabazi after other contenders Norbert Mao, Gilbert Bukenya gave way.

The FDC spokesperson Ssemujju Nganda said on Friday that parties that decided Mbabazi's candidature do not have popular support despite being many in number.

"Look at the last election, what did DP, UPC, UFA get? Even in the summit, we agreed that we do not use majority but consensus," Mr Ssemujju said by telephone.

Mr Wafula Oguttu, the TDA spokesperson, said it was a misrepresentation to declare Mbabazi as the TDA candidate because the opposition summit did not arrive at a joint choice.

" I am the TDA spokesperson. I am telling you there is no candidate for TDA. It is self-defeating [to say there is a TDA candidate]"

Immediately after announcing the TDA fallout, Besigye returned the nomination papers for his presidential candidature to the Electoral Commission through the FDC electoral commission chairman Dan Mugarura.
