Vicks Kingo is one of the latest to pick nomination forms

At least 40 aspirants have so far picked nomination forms to contest in the presidential elections in 2016.

By close of business Friday, the Electoral Commission had registered a total of 40 aspirants. Out of these, three picked nomination forms Friday after paying a nomination fee of Shs 8m. They include Francis Mawanda, Abbey Freeman and Kingo Bush Morodokai, commonly known as Vicks Kingo.

According to deputy EC spokesperson, Paul Bukenya, the number could rise since the deadline for picking and returning the nomination forms is September 21.

"We will continue to issue nomination forms but we advise aspiring candidates to collect them early and return them by the deadline to enable processing because of large volumes of documents involved," Bukenya said in a phone interview.

The trio joins former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, Fredrick Kunya, Deo Lukyamuzi, Joseph Mwambazi and former Makerere University vice Chancellor Venansius Baryamureeba, who have already picked forms.

Others are former Kampala Mayor Nasser Ntege Ssebagala of Liberal Democratic Transparency Party, Benon Biraaro of Farmers Party, Adam Kamulegeya, Dr. Abed Bwanika, Muzamil Mumeya Magomu and Weraga Erisa Kiggundu as independent aspiring candidates.

In 2010, 58 aspirants picked papers, but only eight were successfully nominated.

Aspirants are expected to collect at least 100 signatures from at least 75 districts each in the country. The nomination exercise is expected to close on September 21st when the aspiring candidates are expected to return their nomination forms after paying a non-refundable fee of eight million shillings.
