Liverpool set to unveil Jurgen Klopp as their new manager on Friday with a deal already agreed

The currently clubless former Borussia Dortmund boss has spoken to John Henry and will have face to face talks with the Anfield top brass in next 24 hours

Mersey dash: Liverpool target Klopp is expected to fly in on Thursday

Jurgen Klopp will meet Liverpool's owners within the next 24 hours to finalise arrangements before flying to the UK as the club's new manager.

Klopp is likely to be unveiled on Friday — and according to Anfield legend and fellow German Didi Hamann, it won't be a moment too soon.

Hamann believes former Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp is perfect to lift the spirits on Merseyside, after what he sees as a mood so flat that it has affected morale.

He said: "The place has been like a morgue for a long time now, and it needed a lift from somewhere and that's why the change of manager was a logical thing to do.

"The expectations and the mood couldn't be any further down than it is at the moment at Anfield, so it is a great time to come.

"I don't think with his appointment Liverpool will become title contenders overnight but you need to have a lift from somewhere and I think he can do this."

Klopp has agreed, in principle, a three-year deal with an option for a further season, and will now meet chief executive Ian Ayre and the rest of the Anfield top brass to discuss plans moving forward.

The 48-year-old German, who has two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final on his CV, has agreed to work within the club's current structure.

He has told the Reds' owners he has already run the rule over the squad and has seen enough to feel he wouldn't require too many new faces to be added in the January transfer window.

Klopp will fly to England on Thursday and will meet those players not away on international duty and the rest of the Anfield hierarchy, with the plan being to unveil him on Friday.

He has already spoken with principal owner John W Henry and explained his vision for the future, insisting he can do the same at Anfield as he did at Dortmund.

Since he was approached to take the managers job I bet he has been watching all the video`s of the present team . Has he says their is not much wrong with the present squad , but his priority is to get our defending sorted . Our weakest areas for me are G/K & D/M . A quality goal-keeper & a quality defensive midfielder & we are good to go ....No more flop now we have Klopp .

Thankfully, it appears that we now have a final date for Jurgen's unveiling, which will hopefully mean that some of the hysteria will now die down.  The Liverpool supporter base once it was obvious that he was Anfield bound has been a collective of nerves and anticipation for the man many of them feel will be the clubs saviour.

Didi I understand has been talking to Jurgen for months about the club and city so he should be able to settle in very quickly.

Didi as you are aware David is also right about the atmosphere at Anfield since the beginning of the year as it has been absolutely awful and with a totally different style of football and a fun-loving manager that will hopefully change.

Hopefully with the deal agreed in principal providing there are no hiccups the paperwork can be completed very quickly so that he can begin to meet those left at Melwood whilst getting used to his new surroundings.

Where the squad is concerned, I am not being nasty here, but if Jurgen can work with some of the players that we have, then he will indeed be a miracle worker. If not although he feels he will only need one or two more in January, I can see quite a few of them being moved on.

David Beckham scored his most famous England goal 14 years ago today at Old Trafford

Hero: Beckham sent Old Trafford into raptures

It was one of those 'where were you' moments.

Former England skipper David Beckhamscored many a memorable goal in his glittering career, but the one he struck 14 years ago today, at his home ground of Old Trafford, probably topped the lot.

It didn't come for Manchester United, however, it came for the Three Lions, and boy, did they need it.

England went into their final qualifier for the 2002 World Cup in the box seat to make it to Japan and South Korea automatically.

Their 5-1 victory over Germany four weeks previous (even Heskey scored!) put them ahead of their old rivals on goal difference, with just a match against Greece to go.

Golden balls: Becks strikes the historic free-kick

Beckham and United team-mate Paul Scholes found the net in a 2-0 win in the away game against the Greeks earlier in the campaign, and Sven-Goran Eriksson's side were heavy favourites to get the win they required.

It didn't go to plan, however, with Greece twice taking the lead during the 90 minutes, with Angelos Charisteas and Demos Nikolaidis scoring either side of a Teddy Sheringham equaliser.

Germany were drawing with Iceland, which looked like nudging them to football's showcase event, until Sheringham won a free-kick in stoppage time.

The striker wanted to take it, but Beckham, with his sixth chance to score from a set-piece during the game, curled the ball home to lift the roof off Old Trafford and send England to the World Cup.
