Once again Russia’s president Vladimir Putin has surprised the public. Like U.S. president Obama he has no interest in a military confrontation between the two super powers in the Middle East. Now NATO officers have been invited to Moscow in order to coordinate air strikes.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has invited NATO to participate in Russia’s fight in Syria. Russia’s forces were open for any form of cooperation with NATO right from the beginning. The Pentagon confirmed corresponding agreements between Russia and the U.S.  According to news agency TASS deputy minister of defense Anatoli Antonow expressed on Tuesday his interest in coordinating military flights over the civil war theatre in Syria.

Russia invited foreign commanders to Moscow in order to carry out the coordination of warfare against the terrorist militia „Islamic State“ (IS) in Syria.

Further talks started with a delegation of the Turkish Ministry of Defense with the objective of avoiding any misunderstandings with Turkish military actions.

Last Tuesday the U.S. Pentagon published photos demonstrating how close Russian and U.S. fighter aircraft had approached in the air space over Syria.

Last Monday Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov asked his U.S. colleague Kerry to tell him where to find the so-called „Free Syrian Army“. Russian intelligence could not detect any trace of this “moderate” Syrian opposition group which seems to be some sort of ghost army.

Representatives of the U.S. Ministry of Defense presented their concepts to Russian military officials last week during a conference call. NATO is watching a significant ramp up of Russian military forces in Syria, NATO general secretary Jens Stoltenberg explained. He said that was true not only of air force and anti-aircraft capabilities but also for ground forces at Russia’s air bases in Syria.

According to Russia data more than 50 fighter aircraft and helicopters have been deployed in Syria. For the first time since WWII, U.S. and Russia fighter aircraft are flying sorties over the same country.

All activities are being coordinated between Russia, the U.S. and Israel. Up until now NATO refused to cooperate in general with Russia in Syria. For the time being it is not clear whether NATO will accept the Moscow offer to cooperate. If yes this would be an indication that the neocons have been unable to prevail against president Obama in this question.
