{UAH} NRM Aspirant Ejected for Chanting 'Mbabazi' Name

By Mark Baguma

When Edith Nalongo, an NRM aspirant for a seat in Kihiihi town council, mentioned the name Mbabazi in her chants during the party's local flag bearer campaigns, she earned an automatic disqualification.

Nalongo was in the running for the council seat against Rukia Mbabazi and Justine Karasira. Nalongo was disqualified at Kihiihi Mayors gardens during the last rally ahead of the NRM primary elections, postponed to a yet-to-be named date.

When Nalongo took to the podium and in her characteristic style began chanting "Museveni Oyee", "Mbabazi Oyee",

"Nalongo Oyee" to work up the crowd, she sealed her fate.

Ephraim Tumwesigye, the NRM electoral officer, stopped Nalongo from further campaigns and announced he had disqualified her because she promoted Mbabazi who is not a member of the party.

In disqualifying her, Tumwesigye assumed Nalongo was promoting Amama Mbabazi, the former prime minister and ousted NRM secretary general.

"You have been disqualified from participating in the NRM primaries and you should wait for an official written communication from the district election officer," Tumwesigye told Nalongo as she stepped down from the podium.

This narrowed down the contest for the women's seat in the Kihiihi LC-III council to two women; Justine Karasira and Rukia Mbabazi. Asked why he had unilaterally disqualified Nalongo, Tumwesigye said all contestants had been warned against inciting the electorate by mentioning the name Mbabazi during the campaigns.
