Mao to Bukenya: You are a coward
On September 21, Prof Gilbert Bukenya left the The Democratic Alliance Summit meeting at Naguru hurriedly, after he formally withdrew his interest in the joint opposition presidential candidacy.
Bukenya competed for the TDA presidential flag with Dr Kizza Besigye (FDC), Amama Mbabazi (Go Forward pro-Change) and Norbert Mao (DP). On his way out, he pledged to support the eventual TDA flag bearer.
Little did the TDA leaders know that the next time they would hear from the former vice president, he would have switched loyalties and joined President Museveni.
"He has been evading our calls and he has not been attending our [TDA] meetings for quite some time," DP secretary general Mathias Nsubuga Birekeraawo said on Friday.
Bukenya shocked his TDA colleagues on Friday when he announced his return to Museveni.
TRAITOR
In a press statement issued on Friday, TDA spokesman Phillip Wafula Oguttu said, "What Gilbert Bukenya has done is to betray a cause that TDA stands for and always will."
"TDA will not be distracted by any of its leaders who choose to ally with the dictatorship and betray the people of Uganda," Oguttu added.
Masaka municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga openly snubbed Bukenya since 2013. "I am vindicated by the fact that I was able to tell him two years ago that I didn't trust him; I hope he realises the folly of his act, and stops his nonsense, no one is buying it," Mpuuga said.
Norbert Mao said on Saturday: "Bukenya is not a tough man by any sense of imagination…and like I always say, politicians are consistently inconsistent, it is not surprising that he made a U-turn."
