Nantaba threatens to flee country over life threats
Lands state minister Idah Nantaba is contemplating fleeing Uganda, citing threats to her life.
This follows the pelting of stones at one of the vehicles in her convoy in Kirindi village in Nazigo Sub–county, Kayunga District, on Tuesday.
The attackers, who remain at large, accused Ms Nantaba of interfering in their local politics.
Ms Nantaba believes had they managed to stop her, they might have lynched her.
Kayunga District police commander Sam Bwire, however, said Ms Nantaba has not reported the incident to police.
"As far as I know, the minister has not reported any case to us, maybe she will come," Mr Bwire said.
Speaking after the attack, Ms Nantaba said people who are unhappy with her anti–land–grabbing stance will do anything to stop her from returning to Parliament.
"The land grabbers I am fighting are fellow [Cabinet] ministers, army generals or senior police officers. Currently, all the guns are in Kayunga to ensure that I don't retain my parliamentary seat," said Ms Nantaba as tears rolled down her cheeks.
She added, "I now don't travel in my official vehicle. I have resorted to switching cars to safeguard my life."
The UPDF spokesperson, Col Paddy Ankunda, has time and again refuted claims that some UPDF officers engage in land–grabbing in Kayunga District.
Garnering support for others
With her current term in Parliament about to end, Ms Nantaba had expressed interest in aspiring for the Kayunga Woman MP seat on the NRM ticket again. However, when she lost the support of the party, she said she would contest as an Independent candidate in the 2016 parliamentary election. Now that she has said she might not be around, she urged the electorate in Kayunga to vote for Mr Fred Baleke (Ntenjeru South) and Mr Tom Sserwanga for Kayunga District chairperson.
