{UAH} Police disperse DP meet
LUWEERO. Police in Luweero District last Friday fired live bullets and teargas to disperse DP members who attempted to hold a meeting at two different venues in Wobulenzi Town Council.
Anti-riot police led by Savannah region police commander Julius Caesar Tusingwire engaged DP supporters in a meeting which turned violent after the police refused to let them continue with their meeting at Valley Inn Gardens, calling it illegal.
DP leaders carried a letter from the party secretary general, Mr Mathias Nsubuga, informing police about the planned party activities, including meetings to open up offices and elect flag bearers.
However, police ordered the group to call off the activities and vacate the venues after Mr Tusingwire rejected the letter.
District Woman MP Brenda Nabukenya protested police's claim, saying they informed them in time and the activities had to go on as planned.
Heavily armed police cordoned off the venue and stopped the meeting. After being blocked, DP members resorted to holding a procession, but police again stopped them.
This angered party members who started hurling stones and insults at the police, prompting the Force to use teargas to disperse the crowd.
At Valley Inn Gardens, the DP supporters had been joined by Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze and several party leaders, including Mr Erasto Kibirango, the Luweero District party chairman, who explained that the meeting was not a political rally as police claimed.
The anti-riot police trailed the DP leaders as they shifted to different locations to ensure they do not meet.
Mr Lule David Muzanganda, the Katikamu South DP party leader, said it is unfortunate that the police who are custodians of the law have become law breakers.
