NRM Electoral Commission boss Dr Tanga Odoi and his deputy John Arimpa who made the unprecedented announcement
The much-anticipated National Resistance Movement party primary elections for the Members of Parliament and Local Council Five chairperson candidates scheduled for today Monday October 25, have been postponed by a day.
The party's Electoral Commission late on Sunday night issued an urgent statement pushing the internal elections to October 27 without giving any explanation about the move.
"The National Resistance Movement, Electoral Commission announces the postponement of the party primary elections which were slated for tomorrow Monday the 26th of October, 2015 to Tuesday the 27th of October 25th, 2015 throughout the country," the body of the whole statement read.
The candidates and party members, most of whom were naturally sound asleep at the moment, will have to hold the excitement a little longer.
The whole nation has been on the alert, with police deploying fully in every district and more heavily in the spots where violence is highly anticipated.
Immediately after the announcement was released by the ruling party's Deputy Chairman EC John Kigyagi Arimpa, ChimpReports investigated the matter.
At around 11:00 am, we managed to reach a number of party officials, one of whom was luckily still at the NRM EC headquarters at Kyaddondo road, moments after the postponement was announced.
The official confirmed to us on phone that loading of voting materials for all the 112 districts had just started with the work expected to be complete by 5:00am.
"As you can hear in the background, we have just started the work (packing) which is definitely going on till tomorrow morning. Time is not on our side and we can't force things against time because it's better we face the reality," the official who asked not to be named said.
Under the circumstances, the voting materials would reach distant districts such as Moroto as late as 3:00 pm on Monday.
"The fact is other districts like Kisoro, West Nile, Karamoja region and even many others are going to receive these materials very late and you cannot expect someone, who has waited that long to give you more of his or her time," the source added.
