Tanzania: Oh - Lest I Forget - 'Happy Birthday' President Kikwete, President Putin!

OPINION
By Karl Lyimo

TWO presidents of two nation-states virtually worlds apart in ways more than one share a birthday anniversary today, October 7.

The two - Presidents Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin of the Russian Federation ('Russia') - were born on a date like today's, but in different years and birthplaces!

While Kikwete was born in Msoga Village, Bagamoyo District, in Tanganyika ('Tanzania' today) on October 7, 1950, his Russian gubernatorial counterpart, Putin, was born on the same date today - but two years later to the day! Putin was born in Leningrad - Saint Petersburg today - in the days of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, a.k.a the 'Soviet Union') before it unceremoniously broke up on December 26, 1991, leading to the formation of the Russian Federation and other 'wayward Republics!'

Incidentally, the Russian Federation 'got away' (in the break-up) with over 76 per cent of the area of the former Soviet Union: about 6.593 million square miles. This makes it the largest country in the world by area! What else do the two presidents have in common - apart from just the common birthday anniversary? Oh, I nearly forgot: 'Happy Birthday, President Putin.

Happy Birthday, President Kikwete! The other day, I read an article somewhere titled 'Russia: an untapped tourism market for Africa.' What the article was about is, of course, Russia being a tourist SOURCE market, with African countries being tourist destinations of first choice as a matter of course!

very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
