Lecturer arrested digging up graves
Moroto- Police in Moroto District in Karamoja sub-region are holding several people, among them a university lecturer, after they were allegedly found digging up graves in the Catholic Church cemetery in Kangole village, Ngoleriet Sub-county in Napak District.
The lecturer, a specialist in minerals who also teaches at a top public university, was arrested last week on Monday with four other people after they were found digging up two graves ostensibly in search of mercury.
Ms Irene Aceng, the Karamoja police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of the group, describing the act as nasty.
She said the group was arrested after a tip off by residents who saw them digging the graves.
Lecturer the leader
Ms Acheng said the lecturer was leading the team, using a tool he claimed could ascertain the exact spot where the mercury was in the grave yard.
The Mt Moroto Zone regional police commander, Mr Richard Aruk Maruk, confirmed the development, describing it as unfortunate.
"We still have them in custody as we wait for the legal advice from the state attorney," he said.
Mr Nahaman Ojwe, the resident District Commissioner Napak District, said the suspects wasted their time going to Karamoja.
In April 2013, a former Member of Parliament was arrested and detained after he was caught digging up Awere Bridge in Pader District in search of mercury.
