Kagame Shared The News Of Mother's Death On Twitter

Asteria Rutagambwa, the mother of Rwanda's president Paul Kagame died on Sunday, November 22, 2015. Rutagambwa descended from the family of the last Rwandan queen, Rosalie Gicanda.

Kagame's mother had six children and Kagame was the youngest, born in 1957. The family is reportedly from the Abaganza clan of the Tutsi.

In 1960, when Kagame was two, the family fled to Uganda after ethnic violence flared up against the Tutsi in 1959. Kagame spent much of his early years in Uganda. The family first lived in Gahunge refugee camp in the then Toro district of western Uganda.

While sharing the news on Twitter, Kagame described his mother as "very special."  He did not share more information about the cause of his mother's death.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was among several Kenyan leaders who sent condolence messages to Kagame. Others include: Deputy President William Ruto and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.
