Kansiime leaves Zim in stitches

She came, she cracked jokes and she thrilled.

Ugandan comedian Anne Kansiime proved why her comic video clips have millions of views on YouTube when she brought loads of laughter to 7Arts Theatre in Avondale where she performed on Saturday night.

It was a night of fun, a night of comic relief and a night of appreciation as her fans filled the 800-seater facility to capacity.

Before coming for the tour, Kansiime had promised to make Zimbabwe "laugh, laugh, laugh and laugh". And she just did that. She did it with the prowess of a seasoned comedian. She also brought greetings from Uganda and from her mother, whom she said had just called before the show to pass her regards to Zimbabwe. She also joked about her mother and described her as a big non-performing comedian who inspires her performances.

Zimbabwe enjoyed her act and laughed the night away. She has the tricks and she is intelligent. Kansiime expertly engaged the crowd and left them asking for more. The jokes flowed throughout her act and comedy conquered the traditional popular local arts genres that night.

She joked about religion, music, fellow comedians and other social issues. She felt so much at home and behaved as if it were not her debut appearance on a Zimbabwean stage. She thanked Zimbabweans for their hospitality.

Her brief stay in the country apparently taught her a lot about Zimbabwe. She did not hide her joy. She embraced the hospitality and promised to come back as soon as she gets another date to make her local fans laugh again.

The way she constantly joked with legislators Christopher Mutsvangwa and his wife Monica that were part of the crowd showed how she is good at impromptu interactions with fans.

She shared the stage with local comedians Doc Vikela and Carl Joshua Ncube as well as a fellow Ugandan comedian Cotilda Inapo.

All the comedians did well and Kansiime was full of praises for Carl and Doc Vikela. Above all, she had words of advice for female artistes in the country.

"I saw Carl when he came to Uganda and his act was brilliant. You know, when a foreign comedian visits, you all expect to laugh and we just laughed when Carl came to Uganda. I've seen Doc Vikela for the first time and he's exceptional. I wonder why he doesn't come to Uganda," she said.

"Unfortunately there were no female comedians from Zimbabwe on stage. I urge female artistes from this country to consider taking up comedy. Comedy is big business and they should try it. Look at me, I make a fool of myself but I get money and food on the table. They should also make fools of themselves and make money. After all, who's a better fool between a comedian making money and you, who've paid to come and watch a fool on stage?"

Kansiime also showed her dancing skills during the performance and her act ended when many still wanted more from the talented performer.

Another show was staged yesterday afternoon at the same venue due to public demand. During the tour, Kansiime visited a number of places in the capital and also went to Pakare Paye Arts Centre to see Oliver Mtukudzi. She says she enjoys his music and had promised to visit him ahead of the tour.

Show organisers Extratime Entertainment said they were overwhelmed with the response and thanked all the comedians that took part for putting up good acts. They also thanked their fans and sponsors for helping them make a historic comedy event in the country.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
