Khama rallies support for Botswana candidate for top Commonwealth post

President Ian Khama is due in Valletta, Malta on Thursday to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) where he is expected to rally support for Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, Botswana's candidate for the position of Commonwealth secretary general.The meeting, which will be held from 27-29 November, is expected to discuss, among others, issues relating to climate change, human rights and governance, peace and security, migration, youth issues, gender equality and women's empowerment.

The leaders will also elect a new secretary general of the Commonwealth who will run the organisation of former British colonies for the next four years.

Masire-Mwamba, who is the former deputy secretary general of the Commonwealth, is expected to compete against two other candidates – Sir Roland Sanders from Antigua and Barbuda and Patricia Scotland from the Commonwealth of Dominica.'

CHOGM is preceded by meetings of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), the Foreign Ministers' meeting and other side meetings such as the Commonwealth Youth Forum, the Commonwealth Business Forum and the Commonwealth Women's Forum.
