Police today deployed heavily in the city center and foiled the inaugural campaign rally for Salongo Erias Lukwago, who is seeking to defend his seat at the Kampala Lord Mayor in the coming 2016 general elections.
Lukwago was expected to kickoff his campaigns with a grand rally today at Nakasero market but according to Kampala Metropolitan Area police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the incumbent Lord Mayor did not inform them about his plans.
"We have been informed that he intends to hold a rally at Nakasero market but it is illegal and will not be permitted. We have held a meeting with sister security organs and resolved that the venue is not suitable because it is a market in the city centre that attracts many people, which would paralyze business," Onyango said on Monday afternoon.
"Allowing the rally to go on would cause traffic problems and cause discomfort to other people going around with their businesses."
The police spokesperson however said that Lukwago has an alternative of looking for other suitable venues where he can hold the rally, emphasizing that the mayoral aspirant needs to work hand in hand with the law enforcers to ensure harmony before the rally kicks off.
"Like presidential aspirants do, he should also come and harmonize with police on the venues where he is to hold rallies," Fred Enanga said.
He warned youths against being lured into joining what he termed as an illegal assembly adding that they would be handled according to the confines of the law.
You can add in that security is tight in Nakasero market under the command of cps Dpc Aaron Baguma but traders have vowed not to vacate the place where the rally is going to be held.
By publication, security was still tight around Nakasero market under the command of CPS Dpc Aaron Baguma. Traders also vowed not to give way for the rally to take place.
