{UAH} SAINT JULIUS NYERERE? HAYI KHONA...!

Pope's visit to Uganda will rekindle a cause for canonization of Julius Nyerere

TANZANIA (eTN) - Pope Francis' visit to Uganda will rekindle the cause for the canonization process of Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanzania, who cherished his entire leadership to advocate humanity and humility.

The case to beatify the late Julius Nyerere then canonizing him to a saint has been a quest by several Catholic believers and non-Catholics in Tanzania and Uganda searching for recognition and honoring the first Tanzanian President who cherished and devoted his political life, serving the people of Tanzania and Africa.

Ugandan President Mr. Yoweri Museveni had earlier raised the cause for beatification then canonization of Julius Nyerere to a Saint as recognition to his outstanding contribution to his country Tanzania and Africa with humanity and humility while advocating dignity and equality to mankind.

President Museveni has praised the contribution of the late Tanzanian leader, Julius Nyerere, who not only united the people of Tanzania and worked for mankind.

"The late Julius Nyerere was a Pan-Africanist who loved God and mankind. He united the people of Tanzania, all from different religious backgrounds and helped liberate most African countries like Zimbabwe, Namibia, Angola, South Africa and Uganda from oppression and torturous regimes", Museveni noted.

He earlier urged the pilgrims to Namugongo martyrs continue praying for beatification and then canonization of the late Julius Nyerere, saying he supports the ongoing campaign of the Catholic Church to have the first Tanzania President Julius Nyerere recognized as Saint.

The Ugandan president said he will speak to the Vatican to request the Pope to expedite the process towards the canonization of the late Julius Nyerere. He pledged to visit His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican to recommend the canonization of Julius Nyerere.

The campaign to bestow Sainthood on Julius Nyerere began on January 2006 when Pope Benedict XVI accepted a request from the Bishop of Musoma, the birth place of Julius Nyerere, to canonize the late Tanzanian head of state. The Vatican then granted him title of Servant of God.

During his term in office as first president of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere treated the people of Tanzania equally and strived to live as a common person, taking strict measures against corruption and any form of injustice to the people.

He advocated unity, peace and love to the people of Tanzania and Africa, also worked hard to create an equal society of the people of Tanzania through equal sharing of resources through provision of social services freely so as to reach all the people in Tanzania.

The Late Tanzanian president had as well, fought against poverty and corruption which he declared the biggest enemies to the people of Tanzania.

Tanzanian Catholics eagerly await the Vatican's final decision on the canonization of Julius Nyerere, a devout Roman Catholic. He was undeniably one of Africa's key twentieth century leaders.

The Holy Father is set to visit Uganda this Friday to pay a call at the Namugongo martyrs where early Catholic converts were executed under the orders of the early Baganda traditional leader, Kabaka.

It is expected that His Holiness the Pope will speak about beatification and canonization process of the late Tanzanian leader.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
