Hundreds of US cops lost badge over sex offenses: Report

Hundreds of US police officers have lost their jobs over sexual offenses such as rape and possession of child pornography during the past few years, a new study suggests.

The study, carried out by the Associated Press, examined official data from 41 states to determine how many police officers were fired between 2009 and 2014 and for what reasons.

The investigation also looked into records of state and local police, sheriff's deputies, prison guards and school resource officers and showed that more than 500 officers were relieved of duty for various sexual crimes, including rape, sodomy and sexual shakedowns, forcing the victims to perform sexual acts to avoid arrest.

Another 440 cops were dismissed for sex-related charges, such as possessing child pornography, secretly watching women undress, sending sexually charged messages to underage teens or having sexual relations while on duty.

About one-third of the officers who lost their badges were accused of incidents involving juveniles.

The report noted that such numbers do not represent all the case as they are limited to states where law enforcement licenses are revoked for such crimes and not all US states do that. New York and California, with several of the nation's largest law enforcement agencies, did not take part in the study as they had no statewide system to keep those records.

The corrupt cops’ victims usually included unsuspecting motorists, schoolchildren who were ordered to raise their shirts in a supposed search for drugs, police interns taken advantage of, women with legal troubles who were forced to perform sex acts for promised help, and prison inmates forced to have sex with guards.

This is while not all decertified officers faced criminal charges as some of them surrendered their badges voluntarily to avoid a potential scandal.

The AP said the findings together with other research and interviews with experts, suggest that sexual misconduct is one of the main forms of complaints against US police departments.

News articles between 2005 and 2011 showed a total of 6,724 arrests involving more than 5,500 officers. They showed that sex-related cases were the third most prevalent in numbers, preceded by violence and profit-motivated crimes.
