Uganda Holds 9th Mentoring Walk - Flag Bearer Shares Success Story
By Umar Weswala
Uganda held its 9th mentoring walk yesterday 21st November under the theme "Celebrate Women's leadership, support young leaders."
Over 1500 established women leaders, rising women professionals, secondary school and university students, women from the slums of Kawempe and Kinawataka and participants from Northern and western Uganda walked together, shared experiences and formed mentoring networks.
The Mentoring walk is a Vital Voices Global Partnership initiative that was started by Geraldine Laybourne, the founder of Oxygen media in the USA.
In Uganda, the first Mentoring Walk was organised by Rehmah Kasule in 2009 following her participation in the Fortune/U.S. Department Mentoring program.
This year's mentoring walk was honored with the presence of Ms. Hoddan Addou, the UN Women Country Representative and representatives from the United Nations Democratic Fund (UNDEF).
The walk was flagged off by Rehmah Kasule and Hoddan Addou at the Centenary Park in Kampala. Participants walked up to Kitante Primary School where they listened to inspirational speeches, toured exhibitions and made written commitments to succeed.
According to Rehmah Kasule, the mentoring candle that was lit by Geraldine Laybourne in 2009 has spread far and wide, creating opportunities for over 2750 Ugandans girls and women.
"The mentoring walk has increased access to information, developed leadership skills and provided supportive networks and mentors for the young women" Rehmah Kasule told The Community Agenda.
She said more than 15,000 young women have been mentored and they will actively participate in the forthcoming Ugandan General and Presidential elections as voters, educators, campaigners, electoral officials and candidates.
"I am proud to announce to you ladies and gentlemen that today, we have to show Uganda that 19 young women are contesting at various levels of leadership in Uganda" Rehmah revealed while presenting the contestants to the audience.
