{UAH} LACK OF COMPETITION KILLS DEMOCRACY AND DEVELOPMENT
Congratulations to those that have been successfully nominated as
presidential, parliamentary and local government candidates.
My caution however, is for those who have scooped a chance of being
declared unopposed. On a surface, it is a quick victory, but a symptom
of irregularities in elections be general or party primaries. You all
remember the 1980 controversial general elections scenario where UPC
came out with 17 unopposed out of 118 members. This had come as a
result of blocking other contestants from standing. These include all
DP aspirants in West Nile sub region, some aspirants in the North like
Akbar Adoko Nekyon in Lango, Tiberio Atwoma Okeny bin Acholi, Chango
Macho in Busia/Tororo/Bukedi, etc...
So we should not be proud of those declared unopposed be at a
parliamentary or a local government level. Where there is no
competition, there is little or no democracy.
