Tanzania: Artists to Be Paid 60 Percent Royalties for Their Labour

Dar es Salaam — Entertainers in Tanzania will be paid 60 per cent loyalties of their works starting next year.

Copyright Society of Tanzania CEO Doreen Sinare told a seminar organised by Copyrights Management East Africa Limited (CMEA) to give awareness to musicians, composers and producers that the amount of money would be determined by the playing duration of the music in radio and television stations with relation of advertisement price list.

She said electronic media owners would be required to pay entertainers as required by regulations.

She said CMEA had been given mandate to monitor and record all artists' works aired in various electronic media. "Each year, a lot of music is aired in broadcast stations throughout the country. CMEA will collect data of all broadcast media.

Artists would be paid as per regulation for revenue calculations which depend on percentage of music content and percentage of gross revenue or operating costs.

"If your song is aired for one minute to 10 you will get one per cent of operating costs, which is determined by advertising rate card and period. The payment varies due to the fact that the cost of advertisement at night is different from that of day time," she said.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
