Uganda: Police Warn Politicians Over Social Media Misuse

By Joseph Kato

Kampala — Campaign managers misusing social media will be arrested, police spokesperson has warned.

Mr Fred Enanga said campaign managers from various political groups have of recent filled social media outlets like twitter and Facebook with false and inciting messages, something that puts the national peace and security at stake.

"We have realised that many campaign managers are feeding the public with false information which can cause chaos in the country. As a result, we warn such people to stop with immediate effect or risk being arrested," Mr Enanga said while addressing the media at a weekly national security press briefing.

He added that the police were monitoring and following up the alleged torture and harassment accusations as reported on social media and they have realised that the stories are being manoeuvered for political popularity.

"As police, we take every case of inhumane treatment as a serious one. We put up initiatives to trace where the cases have been committed. Unfortunately, all the stories of torture and harassments are just being concocted with intent of attracting political sympathy and cheap popularity," he said.

Mr Enanga noted that the police's Cybercrime Unit had downloaded and started investigations into the matters, adding that the culprits will be called upon to explain the motive. Among the charges the victims are likely to face as cited by Mr Enanga include false information and inciting violence.

Meanwhile, the police are holding two people for allegedly engaging in theft during the Pope Francis's historical Mass at Namugongo Martyr's shrine last Saturday. The suspects had stolen two mobile phones and money worth Shs230,000, which has since been recovered.

Three children who were lost from their parents at Munyonyo and Namugongo martyr shrines have also been reunited with their parents.

"We are happy that we effectively and successfully secured the papal visit, during his historic three-day visit to Uganda. This was due to the level of cooperation and coordination of our specific and joint operational and intelligence products," Mr Enanga said.

He also applauded Ugandans, pilgrims and visitors for their overwhelming support, patience and understanding despite the road closures and restrictions imposed at selected venue and routes.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
