Mbabazi demands Aine phone recording
Go Forward presidential candidate John Patrick Amama Mbabazi has tasked police to produce a recording of Christopher Aine's last telephone conversation in December 2015 before he disappeared. The said recording is between Aine, the head of his security detail, and Ezra Kabugo.
The letter is addressed to the inspector general of police, Gen Kale Kayihura, through Mbabazi lawyers Muwema & Company advocates.
"We seek police cooperation to help resolve the controversy surrounding the disappearance of Aine which has now obtained for one month…" the lawyers wrote.
"…In the affidavit of Kabugo, which was sworn in support of the pending habeas corpus, he asserts that he called Aine (0705445853) from his mobile telephone number 0782222530 on the morning of December 16, 2015," the letter partly reads. "During the ensuing phone conversation, Aine is said to have told him [Kabugo] that policemen had surrounded his house and he believed they wanted to arrest him."
The lawyers advise that for police to test the veracity of Kabugo's evidence, the force needs to independently investigate whether Kabugo actually called Aine.
They say police needs to establish the location of Aine at the time of the call and the voice record of what was discussed. The lawyers also want to know the last location of Aine before his phone was switched off and whether the phone has been switched on again.
"Since the Uganda Police says that it is looking for Aine and that it is carrying out an investigation into the alleged assault he committed in Ntungamo on December 13, 2015, it would be a shared interest for both the police investigation and the pending habeas corpus application for his telephone records to be interrogated," the lawyers say.
This is the latest in a series of attempts by the Mbabazi camp to pressure police to produce Aine. Earlier this month, Mbabazi demanded that police produces Aine. The application is yet to be heard.
Police spokesman Fred Enanga confirmed yesterday that he received Mbabazi's letter.
"We shall contact the telephone companies to produce the last recordings and voices to prove that it was Aine talking," Enanga said.
He added that police had started getting some clues on Aine's whereabouts.
