Late in 1985, the very respected Leader of Opposition Dr. Paul Kawanga
Ssemogerere visited part of Luwero Triangle. He had been appointed
Internal Affairs Minister under the Okellos Junta.
On answering a question from wanainchi about the indiscipline of the
then government forces, UNLA, Ssemogerere wondered whether if the
people of Luwero had not allowed their children to join NRA rebels,
government forces would have pounced on them. The NRA sympathizers
were not happy, but he told them the truth.
later at a press confefrence in Kampala, he wondered whether there was
any government all over the would which would not have deployed its
armed forces if police stations are attacked by rebels.
That was the time each group was blaming the other for violating the ceasefire.
Likewise, the Secretary General of NRM Justine Kasule Lumumba said
that government would deploy its armed forces from the barracks to
deal with any rioters if the opposition is defeated in the coming
elections, and it resorts to riots. She appealed to young people to
shy away from violence and bloodshed.
She is blamed left, right and center for telling the truth!
No wonder, she replaced a super-minister who doubled as Secretary
General and Prime Minister and he and his aides inside and outside NRM
camp are making capital out of this.
