Kenyan Bus Driver Detains Traffic Cop for Soliciting Bribe

A driver of a commuter omnibus in Nairobi, Kenya, reportedly detained a traffic officer who demanded a KES10 000 ($100) bribe from him.

The driver was driving on thhe Super highway when the police officer stopped him and asked for the cash.

According to the driver, the officer did not state the offence committed.

After being held, together with his conductor for more than an hour, the driver decided to give the cop KES 2 000 ($2), The Star reports.

The omnibus crew then mobilised their colleagues who blocked the road, making it difficult for the officer to move. The driver then demanded his money back from the officer. Seeing that he was in trouble, the officer quickly gave the driver his money back before running for his life.

Traffic officers have been listed as the most corrupt in government, according to Daily Nation.

The officers force commuter omnibus drivers to part with KES 1 000 - KES 3 000, collecting an average of KES 300 000 daily in bribes.

Following the introduction of mobile courts, other officers have also been accused of forging mobile court receipts and pocketing all fines collected.

The mobile courts were introduced to give instant sentences to traffic offenders.
