Gulu. Democratic Party (DP) president Norbert Mao claimed to have eluded police arrest at the weekend as he campaigned at night in Bungatira Sub-county, Aswa County, Gulu District.
According to witnesses, Mr Mao, who was in the company of DP party officials from the sub-region, was intercepted by police while speaking to supporters of Mr Tonny Kitara, the DP candidate contesting for the Aswa County parliamentary seat, at wang oo (a fire place). It is said upon receiving information of the politicians canvassing for votes beyond the stipulated time, the police swung into action with heavily armed officers.

Scuffle
A brief scuffle is said to have ensued between residents and the police. In the process, Mr Mao, Mr Kitara and other party members fled the scene without being arrested.
"The police gave chase but we used Besigye-like tactics to confound and elude them. We then surfaced at another Wang oo much later to the relief of the people," Mr Mao wrote on his Facebook wall.

The DP president condemned police for interfering with the Acholi cultural civic education, which he said is carried out in homesteads at night, while sitting around a fireside, arguing it is where knowledge is imparted.
The Aswa region police spokesperson, Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema, told Daily Monitor on Monday that he had not yet received information about the incident but promised to follow it up.
