{UAH} NFL INJURIES
Edward P'Ojim, Moses Nekyon, WBK,
I listened to a programme on BBC World Service this morning and I was
so shocked to learn that more than 30% of all American football
players suffer serious brain injury, some so serious that they are
vegetative and lead the rest of their lives after retirement in abject
misery, with no insurance for health cover etc. In any other
profession in the world, such a fatality rate would never be allowed.
It was pointed out by the brain surgeon who carried out the research
that even in modern warfare, in defence of the nation, no General
would send his troops to battle, knowing that 30% of them are likely
to be killed or seriously injured or incapacitated. What do American
people think about this cruel sport? Is it funny to derive pleasure
from such a cruel sport? It was pointed out in the programme that
about 19 safety improvements have been implemented in the last five
years alone, but this is just a feeble tinkering with a massive
problem since most NFL players are now bigger, taller, faster and
heavier. Should NFL be classified as barbaric, cruel and inhuman
sport?
