NRM youth fear Besigye popularity

Mbale- National Resistance Movement (NRM) youth leaders in Mbale have expressed fear over the increasing popularity of Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate Kizza Besigye among youth.

During their peaceful demonstration that took place at the district youth offices in Maluku last Tuesday, the youth said political isolation and failure by the party leadership to facilitate NRM youth leaders at the grassroots, has given an upper hand to the Opposition.
"We are concerned about the growing influence of Dr Besigye among the youth. The NRM leadership has even gone further to demotivate the few at the grassroot doing mobilisation," said Mr Yahaya Mwanje, the youth chairperson Mbale District and the NRM flag bearer.

Mr Mwanje explained that the NRM Secretariat has refused to support the NRM youth local leaders, which he said has affected theparty performance.
Mr Ayub Kahandi, the NRM youth vice chairperson, asked the party leadership to prevail upon the secretariat to empower local youth leaders. "The NRM leadership at the district has also isolated us and it's using old people to do mobilisation yet they do not appeal to young people. That is a political mistake that our party will regret," Mr Kahandi said.

He said their peaceful demonstration was only a signal to the party that the youth have been left out.

Ms Mariam Nambuya, the youth General secretary NRM, Mbale, said the youth will keep the party strong when the current leaders leave.

However, the NRM chairperson Mbale District, Mr Muhamood Masaba, when contacted, said the youth claiming to be NRM leaders were presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi's supporters.
"Those are not NRM youth leaders or supporters because if they were, they would know that it's not time for demonstrations," he said.
