1986 people power: Philippines's gift to the world
MANILA, Philippines – Thirty years ago this week, Filipinos achieved the impossible and brought down a dictatorship. Never before had a people risen up in anger to overthrow a violent and corrupt dicatorship through largely peaceful means. It was also probably the first time in history that ordinary people lost fear of the gun and discovered the latent strength immanent in all human beings.
The 1986 people power revolution inspired pro-democracy uprisings in other parts of the world and will never be forgotten by all freedom loving people the world over. People all over the world should stand up and salute the magnificient achievement by the Filipino people and celebrate and rekindle the spirit of EDSA as it represents a high water mark in world history. EDSA demonstarted that democracy can triumph over dictatorship, tyranny and impunity. The peaceful revolt ended the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos and propelled Corazon Aquino to power.
Demonstrating the primacy of people power is the Filipinos' gift to the world: they paved the way for the peaceful dismantling of the Berlin Wall and the return of democracy in South Korea and Romania.
The Philippines People Power Revolution is a bright star in world history and a shining example to the people of Uganda and all oppressed peoples in the world to follow.
