Police and protesters clashed in Rennes, after hundreds took to the streets to protest against the construction of the Notre-Dame-des-Landes airport. The march was originally planned as a 'anti-airport carnival,' with many participants dressed in fancy dress. The carnival atmosphere soon dissipated as protesters threw projectiles and flares at police, who responded by firing canisters of tear gas at the crowd. According to local authorities five people were arrested for "throwing projectiles at police.
