Posted  Thursday, March 3   2016 at  02:00Gulu- Democratic Party president Norbert Mao has castigated Members of Parliament (MPs) from Acholi sub-region under the Acholi Parliamentary Group (APG) for doing little to tackle problems facing the people they represent.
Mr Mao, who was addressing a rally at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu Municipality last Monday, said the MPs have failed to bring the challenges affecting the sub-region to the attention of government even when they have the opportunity in Parliament.
"The voices of the Acholi leaders in the 9th Parliament have been silent yet there are many pressing issues affecting the population. The brunt of the two-decade insurgency is still affecting the locals but none of the leaders have raised issues on them," Mr Mao said.
Mr Mao, who once served as chairperson of APG, noted that the current lawmakers from Acholi sub-region can't table before Parliament matters regarding land conflict, cattle compensation, veterans, poverty eradication and railway line.
"Since the lawmakers have been silent in Parliament, government has not given much attention to the sub-region ," Mr Mao said.
The two-time Gulu Municipality legislator in the 6th and 7th Parliament, welcomed the election of Agago County MP Prof Morris Ogenga Latigo, a former leader of Opposition in the 8th Parliament, saying the sub-region could benefit from his good sense of leadership. He said Prof Ogenga could help to revive the APG.
APG Chairperson Reagan Okumu, who is also the Aswa County MP-elect, blamed APG members for their woes.
Mr Okumu claims that for the last three years, some legislators from the sub-region never raised a point on the floor of Parliament on issues affecting the people they represent.
