Doctors confirm Uganda Cranes goalie Dhaira has abdominal cancer
Confirmed information from doctors in Iceland that Uganda Cranes and Iceland based IBV Vestmannaeyjar goalkeeper Abel Dhaira has abdominal cancer hit hard the football fraternity and humanity in general.
The shot stopper's health deteriorated in January 2016 and he was hospitalized for close to 6 weeks at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala.
Upon return to the Nordic Island country, when he has been on his second stint with IBV, doctors confirmed the ailment as cancer than the usual ulcers, abdominal pain and typhoid that the gifted goalkeeper was often complaining about.
Since 2013, Dhaira, has not featured for the Uganda Cranes but he has always remained hopeful he would make a comeback.
IBV head coach Bjarni Jóhannsson is remorseful for the tests and fate of the player;
It is sad that Abel is too sick and has been diagnosed with cancer.
The club has pledged to stand with him and a big testimonial game is gonna be played in the coming weeks
Dhaira had last featured for IBV way back in October 2015 and requested to rest when his health worsened before he moved to Uganda to visit his family, based in Walukuba, Jinja town.
The Club has set up a fundraising drive to help meet the cost of treatment for the player under the leadership of Harold Bergvinsson who is a trustee of the projects at IBV.
A statement on the official club website reads;
Abel Dhaira, played for the club, had big problems with illness in recent months. He was cut in Uganda for the year due to cancer in the abdomen which has now spread to more organs. Abel will begin treatment in the country next week.The company sponsors and stand firmly behind Abel and will seek to ensure him the best medical care available.
Abel to relieve the financial burden of such a difficult disease and the company has partnered with Vodafone decided to stand for fund raising.
Several kind-hearted people across the globe have already responded positively to fundraising drive that will be followed by a testimonial match.
Vrege Mkrtchyan who lives in Russia is among the millions of people touched by the sad development.
Eric Dhaira, his young brother at MUBS and also a goalkeeper at Soana F.C is saddened by the news;
We were with him in January 2016 (in Uganda) but he was not feeling well.
We are heart-broken and ony wish God helps him recover soon.
Dhaira (Abel) is best remembered for his ball juggling antics while in the goal posts at Express F.C.
The exciting goalie was summoned to the national team (Uganda Cranes) and won a few caps to his name.
He is son to the legendary former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Bright Dhaira, who formerly work at KCCA F.C as goalkeeping coach.
At the moment, Dhaira senior handles the goalkeeping department at Jinja side, Bul F.C.
The actual dates for Abel Dhaira's testimonial are yet to be confirmed.
