Please check on the Food Chain series currently being broadcast on BBC World Serviice. I think they are on Series 14 now. Very sobering. Last nights Series looked at unfair trade practices by Supermarkets in the UK that commit Kenyan farmers to grow food crops but without giving any guarantee that all their harvests will be bought. For eg Morrison's, a top supermarket that operates through-out the UK ordered some 100 tonnes of fresh beans from Kenyan farmers, but on the week when they were ready for export, Morrisons reduced the order by a half because they calculated they would not be able to sell it at a profit. Yet the Kenyan farmers had spent a whole year investment in the crops and sale of the crops would be their entire year's income. There would be no resale value in the beans, since they are perishable and must be sold within a matter of days, so a half of a year;s effort had to be trashed.
