Benin's presidential election will proceed to a second round, pitting former Prime Minister, Lionel Zinsou against wealthy businessman Patrice Talon, according to figures issued early on Tuesday by the National Independent Electoral Commission.Zinsou led the first round of the election after polling 28.44 percent of the vote while Talon garnered 24.89 of the ballot.
Political headquarters have been kept busy with horse-trading activities ahead of the second round which is slated in 15 days, with the two presidential hopefuls attempting to win the backing of the other candidates who have dropped out of the race.
The defeated contenders currently being courted include Sebastien Ajavon who secured 693,492 votes or 23.03 percent, Abdoulaye Bio Tchane (8.79 percent) and former Prime Minister Pascal Irenee Koupaki (5.85 percent).
Thirty-three (33) candidates were vying to succeed incumbent President Thomas Yayi Boni whose second and last term ends on 5 April 2016.
Some 4.7 million registered voters went to the polls in Benin on Sunday.
Despite the 64 percent turnout, Sunday's poll was somewhat smeared by some anomalies in the distribution of voters' cards.
