{UAH} The elections are over, Surrender IDs, Rwandans told.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Ms Rose Akol, has said many Rwandan citizens are holding Uganda National Identity Cards and they ought to surrender them because it is illegal.

"May be Rwandans do not know the implications of having two national identity cards and need to be educated by the immigration officers here at the border post so that they can easily surrender one of the cards; it is improper to have two," said Ms Akol.

She made the remarks while inspecting the readiness of Mirama-Kagitumba one-stop border post at Uganda-Rwanda border in Ntungamo District on Sunday. It will be commissioned by President Museveni and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame on April 23.

Ms Akol said authorities at the border post collect at least 10 Ugandan IDs from Rwandan nationals on a daily basis.
"There is still a big number of Rwanda nationals possessing our national IDs; the high number of illegal immigrants has increased pressure on the economy," said Ms Akol.

Efforts to get in touch with Mr Frank Mugambage, the Rwandan ambassodor to Uganda, and the consular officer were futile as they were not in office by press time.
Under the constitution, Rwandans are allowed to have Ugandan IDs if they have dual citizenship.

Mr Stephen Mutambi, an immigration officer at the border post, said some Rwandans are using Ugandan IDs to enter the country and others are using illegal routes such as River Kagera.
"Apart from those that possess two identity cards and are considered Ugandans, there are those using illegal routes like River Kagera, especially when water levels have reduced," he said.

Mr Mutambi also said there was lack of accommodation for the immigration staff and their computers not linked with those of their Rwandan counterparts and have no access to Internet.
