{UAH} Job: Developing an automated algorithm to extract electron number density from plasma wave measurement

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx. 1170 employees, the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the System Earth and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany's largest science organization.

For Section 2.3 Earth's magnetic field, work group Magnetosphere, we invite applications for a

PhD Student Position (m/f)

Reference No. 23/23/16 G

The successful candidate will work on a project aiming at developing an automated algorithm to extract electron number density from plasma wave measurement made onboard the Van Allen Probes mission, a currently operating dual-spacecraft NASA mission. The candidate will perform research targeted at understanding of the dynamics of the plasma density in the Earth's inner magnetosphere. The work includes also: Development of the user documentation for the Neural Network Codes, development of the database, writing of the manuscript describing the technique.

Your tasks:
develop an automated system for the analysis of satellite data
test the developed system and develop documentation
perform analysis of the dependence of the dynamics of the plasma populations on solar wind conditions and geomagnetic indexes
develop empirical and physics based models of the plasmaspheric dynamics

Your qualifications:
Master's degree or equivalent in Natural Sciences
willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment
ability to independently develop novel research approaches
knowledge of general physics and space physics
optional qualifications include: working knowledge of a number of programming languages such as Matlab, C, C++, Fortran

Starting date: as soon as possible
Fixed term: 2+1 years
Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week)
