Monitor ceiling collapses, chief sub fired

Thunder News Reporter
They say what goes around comes around. This is the punchy description one can use to describe events happening at the Namuwongo-based Nation Media Group Bureau called Monitor Publications.

Thunder News can reveal authoritatively that Mr Otim Lucima, the Monitor newspaper universal editor, was, effective last Tuesday, demoted to the post of Revise Editor.

Lucima, who elevated himself to the current post with the help of friends during the reign of Malcolm Gibson, has since been rated the most useless editor the paper has ever had in that position.

The post of universal editor was created after the likes of Don Wanyama, John Tugume, Chris Obore, Denis Kawuma and Richard Wanambwa were fired. Previously it used to be called Chief Sub Editor.

Board sitting recently agreed that the man who earns Shs4 million was not worth the pay. The last straw to break his back came when Lucima published headlines meant for spread pages on back-to-back pages.

Earlier, there had been complaints of Lucima's failure to beat deadlines, resulting into late printing of the paper.

"Lucima is so distracted. He is either busy taking tea, facebooking or moving from one desk to the other," an insider told Thunder news, adding, "He has been replaced with Japeth Obuku who has been heading the revise desk."

Analysts say Obuku could be a better replacement given that he has been in the newsroom for more than a decade. "How can you be a chief sub without knowledge in indesign? How will you know that the page is poorly designed?" another insider asked of Lucima.

These developments come at the heels of the demotion of Othman Semakula, who has been the product editor of Prosper Magazine. Semakula is now a sub editor at the newsdesk.

Meanwhile, the features editor at the same newspaper tendered in her resignation recently. Angela Nampewo resigned after she asked for more permanent staff in form of writers and sub editors. When she received a deaf ear yet her bosses were demanding revolutionary changes at the desk, Angela opted out. The post has since been advertised.

As if more trouble at the media house, the ceiling of the second floor of the oldest building at Namuwongo collapsed about two-three weeks ago and has since been undergoing renovation. This affected the finance and HR departments that have since been relocated to the lower floors. Fortunately no one was injured in the cave-in.

We wish Obuku (in Pix) the best in his new role.
