Bad blood in the opposition's biggest party Forum for Democratic
Change is started to unfold as top leaders take on each other.
On Thursday, against the wish of some party members, FDC President
Gen. Mugisha Muntu unveiled the Leader of Opposition in Parliament in
the names of Hon Winnie Kiiza, who is also the Kasese Woman MP.
A section of party leaders however were opposed to this decision since
it would reflect the party as accepting defeat in the February
Presidential elections.
Early this week, the FDC leadership had stated that they were not
going to appoint the LOP since they "won" the elections.
On Thursday nonetheless, Muntu announced Kizza as the LOP, Kiira
Municipality MP Ssemuju as Opposition Chief Whip and Dokolo Woman MP
Cecilia Ogwal as the Commissioner of Parliament.
This morning, the party's chief mobilizer Ingrid Turinawe took to
social media and stated that Muntu had no authority to concede defeat
on behalf of Besigye even when the retired Major General is the party
president.
"Nobody can concede defeat on behalf of any candidate. No body," Ingrid Charged.
According to Ingrid, FDC only sponsored Besigye's candidacy and the
party cannot determine the election outcome for him.
"FDC sponsored a candidate but it is or was not a candidate! Not even
party president Gen. Muntu or any other leader! Not me, not you! Dr.
Besigye was the candidate in the presidential race. He speaks for
himself. Ugandans voted him. He won elections and was sworn in," she added.
Ms. Turinawe stressed that she and other colleagues cannot take any
orders from Gen. Muntu and are only waiting to hear from Besigye when
he is released.
"Yes, he is in prison but he will be out soonest. He is our president
until he guides us otherwise. The struggle to claim our victory is on!
Watch the space."
Yesterday after the appointment, Muntu warned this group, stressing
that the party must accept the current circumstances and move on.
