Sir Thomas More to Richard Rich: "For Wales? Why Richard, it profit a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world. . . but for Wales!"
A Man For All Seasons by Richard Bolt

I was reminded yesterday of the film (adapted by Robert Bolt from his stage play) A Man for All Seasons. It always has been a favorite of my father's, and thus one I grew up
watching, and in it are several scenes I consider rather epic. The
scenes that make your spine tingle, where the script is so superbly
written and the actors encompass the characters so well there is a
certain magic in watching it.

One such scene in A Man for All Seasonsis More's trial, particularly the scene with Richard Rich. The context, for those who have not seen it, is this: Sir Thomas More, former
Chancellor of England and a gifted lawyer, is on trial for refusing to
sign the Act of Succession, which he objected to on the grounds of the
power it gave Parliament in matters of religion over the Papacy.

Theturning point in More's trial, which leads to his conviction and
execution, is the perjured testimony of Rich. As Rich leaves, More
stops him, saddened by Rich's betrayal of him and the younger man's
betrayal of his own character, and notes Rich now wears a chain of
office. Thomas Cromwell, the prosecution if you will, announces that
Sir Richard has been made Attorney General for Wales, at which point
More says to Rich, "For Wales. Why Richard, it profits a man nothing to
give his soul for the whole world. But for Wales?"

Robert Bolt,as I learned through doing a bit of research, was an agnostic, who
admired the fact that Thomas More held fast and true to his conscience.
Bolt saw beyond More's religious convictions and touched upon something
all people could admire: a man who could not be bought as
Richard Rich was, a man who stood by his principles, and a man who
could have believably uttered the words Bolt ascribes to him…"I think
that when statesmen forsake their own private conscience for the sake
of their public duties, they lead their country by a short route to
chaos."

Whenever I see a politician or public figure fail to
uphold the promises he made, not just to the people, but to himself in
his own admitted beliefs, I cannot help but think, "But for Wales?"
