PRESS STATEMENT
MUSEVENI REGIME BEGINS PURGE OF POLICE OFFICERS FEARED
LOYAL TO OPPOSITION
Prosecutions intended to Send a message say Retired General Mugisha
Muntu.
(Kampala, Uganda) Fearful of dissent within the ranks of the national
police, the Museveni regime moved swiftly on Friday to arrest twenty
police officers accused of facilitating the escape of interim President Kizza
Besigye from illegal detention at his home. The officers are accused of
allowing Besigye to travel to an unknown location for a swearing-in
ceremony on Wednesday, May 11th.
Concerns about the loyalty of both the police and the army had already
been running high in regime circles after members of both services voted
overwhelmingly in favour of opposition candidates in February's national
elections. With apparent evidence that some officers were now prepared
to assist Besigye in acts that Museveni considers treasonous, it seems
bolder action was necessary.
"I am quite surprised Museveni would move forward with these
prosecutions," said retired senior military officer, and FDC democratic
opposition leader General Mugisha Muntu. "It's a public acknowledgement
of the depth of his problem in the security services. I guess he's reached
the point where he's willing to lose face in order to send a message to
others who may be thinking the same way."
