Landslide kills 13 in SW Uganda
KAMPALA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen people have been confirmed dead following a landslide in the southwestern Ugandan district of Bundibugyo, police have said.
Fred Enanga, a local police spokesperson told Xinhua by telephone Tuesday that nine children and four adults died in the Monday night incident sparked off by torrential rains.
Enanga urged the public in low-lying areas prone to floods to vacate such places during the rainy season.
Local reports said scores of people are still missing and hundreds of others have been left homeless. Property are also destroyed.
Uganda Red Cross said a statement that its staff are in the area carrying out rescue operations.
Uganda's worst landslide occurred in March 2010 in which over 200 people were reportedly killed in the eastern Ugandan district of Bududa.
