{UAH} NRA REACTIONARY TRIBAL OUTFIT FROM START TO FINISH?

Politics & Govt in Uganda 101

No political party / organization in Uganda was formed on religious,
tribal or regional basis except the NRA (NRM) & Kabaka Yekka (KY).

1. DP is a Catholic Party. False. DP was a social justice movement
against discrimination & exclusion & marginalization of Catholics in
Buganda / Uganda by the colonial state which had elevated
Protestantism as state religion. For that objective historical
reasons,. Catholics were bound to be majority members. Religion was
not the reason it was founded.

2. UPC is a northern & Protestant Party. False. UPC is a successor to
Uganda National Congress, founded in 1952 by Ignatius Musazi et al.
UNC itself emerged out a social movement of African farmers against
European and Indian discriminatory commodity pricing, marketing,
processing and export and retail and wholesale trade monopoly (a
situation M7 has returned Ugandans to).

In 1958, UNC split into two between Jolly Joe Kiwanuka & Musazi. The
Jolly Joe faction elected Milton Obote its President. On 9th March
1960, Obote UNC merged with Uganda Peoples Union ( UPU), to create
UPV. UPU, led by Rwetsiba, was formed by members of the legislative
Counci (LEGICO), from Western Uganda.

3. Kabaka Yekka, was formed on the eve of 1962 elections,to take care
of the provisions for ,indirect elections in Buganda. It was to ensure
that the Kabaka remained supreme & his interest taken care of without
contestations. And to take care of the interest of Buganda, as the
country moved to Independence, after Buganda accepted to remain part
of independent Uganda with special federal status.

4. NRA was a popular national movement. False. It was a narrow tribal
movement against the UPC and a false northern dominance. It was
dominated by ganda and bahima feudalists and Rwandese Tutsi refugees.
Their main grievance was the 1966/7 democratic revolution that ended
Bahima and Ganda domination and exploitation of Bahiru, banyara,
baruli, etc. The NRM was a late addition to the armed organisation,to
give it a political garb. But it remains an armed organization, with a
narrow tribal and regional base. Forget the so called mass party.
Where people are impoverished, there will always be mass takers of
handouts.

Class dismissed.
