Police deployed on streets

Security in Moroto town has been tightened as Uganda's main opposition leader Kizza Besigye spends third night in prison.

Dr Besigye, the former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate and four-time challenger of Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni was arrested last Wednesday in Uganda's capital Kampala and arraigned in Moroto Chief Magistrates Court in the north-eastern district of Uganda where he was charged on Friday with treason.

Since Wednesday when Dr. Besigye was taken to Moroto, security in the district has been tightened, with Besigye's supporters being denied access to see him.

Security both in and out of Moroto government prisons where Besigye is held is tight with serious restrictions of visitors.

All visitors are not allowed to access the prison premises with any electronic devices including phones, cameras or watch.

Vehicles of motorcycles are also not allowed access.

Security operatives both in uniform and plain-cloth could be seen patrolling the streets of Moroto.

Meanwhile, unverified reports have it that a team of lawyers, including former independent presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi of the Go-Forward pressure group are on their way to visit Dr Besigye in prison.

Mbabazi yesterday said he was ready and willing to defend Besigye as his lawyer in case he (Besigye) needed his services.

Teargas as he is transferred 

FDC handlers have also told us Besigye now being transferred from Karamoja amidst teargas and live bullets.

FDC party said in a tweet that the transfer comes after police realising that Karamoja might be "cut off" from rest of Uganda "but we have a lot of moral support, there, too".

The transfer spark off protests in Moroto town prompting police to fire teargas and live bullets in order to disperse the crowd.

The police helicopter carrying Besigye had already taken off by the time of posting this story.

The helicopter will land at Kajjansi where a prison bus will pick up Besigye and take him to Luzira prison.

The transfer of Besigye from Moroto government prison to Luzira was ordered by Moroto Chief Magistrate court.

Chief Magistrate Charles Yeteise's order follows Besigye's request to be held in Kampala where he allegedly committed the offence.

Museveni probes police chiefs 

Meanwhile, The Observer, reports that President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the investigation of senior police officers over Besigye's escape from Kasangati last week.

Those under investigation include; James Ruhweza, the operational commander of Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), Wesley Nganizi, the KMP North regional police commander, Emmanuel Bamuzibire, the KMP field force police commander, the Kasangati district police commander, OC station Kasangati, the KMP crime intelligence officer and head of security at Besigye's home.

Dozens of cops were arrested in relation to Besigye's escape.

According to the newspaper, police chief Kale Kayihura wants senior police officers to explain why they allowed a boda boda rider into Besigye's home yet they were under strict orders not to let anyone in because most of the retired colonel's would-be visitors had been placed under house arrest at their respective homes.

It is the boda that Besigye used to sneak out of his home while covering his head with a helmet.

Two years ago, Besigye escaped house arrest when Sam Omala, then commander of the police field force, had camped at his home.
