{UAH} Why do some (most?) Ugandans feel hey are not Ugandans? Identity crisis Yoga Adhola revisited!
Members,
There is a disturbing trend in "our" country which has been bothering me since the advent of the 1986 revolution.
Some Ugandans are increasingly feeling like they are foreigners in their own country. They feel they are outside looking in?
They feel hopeless , useless and insignificant!
In the past ( pre revolution) the educational system was a meeting/melting point for young Ugandans all over the nation. You could find a primary boarding school in Tororo like Kisoko having students from as far as Kisoro and Palabek!
These days such a mix can only be found in Kampala and its environs.
I recently met a young brilliant educated Ugandan girl from Gulu. (She had travelled out for her masters) who told me something that brought waters to my tired old eyes.
She told me she never knew she was a ugandan till when she was applying for her passport to get out for her Masters programme! She said all throughout her school days in Kampala she was referred to as Acholi by both the teachers and fellow students so she thought Acholi was her " nationality"...NOT Ugandan!
What has happened to our country? Where are we headed to? A Bantustan of tribal chieftainships or what?
And ....yet our children who we thought were lucky to have grown up outside Uganda also have this same problem of identity! They are being called " foreigners" in their adoptive country of domicile!
What a double tragedy!
