Zuma to get billed for Nkandla - News
Pretoria. (NMG) South Africa's President Jacob Zuma will on Tuesday know the amount that he must pay back for non-security upgrades to his private homestead in Nkandla.
The Constitutional Court ruled that the Public Protector's findings were binding and President Zuma had to pay part of the money for the upgrades.
The Constitutional Court then tasked Treasury to calculate the "reasonable costs" of non-security upgrades that were implemented by the Department of Public Works. On March 31, the court gave Treasury 60 days to determine the calculation and ordered that the "president must personally pay the amount within 45 days".
Tuesday marks exactly 60 days and Treasury has confirmed it will reveal the figure on the day.
The upgrades that were identified from the $23 million project were the visitors' centre, amphitheatre, cattle kraal, chicken run and swimming pool.
That was in line with the findings of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela in her report – Secure in Comfort – which was released more than two years ago and which has been the subject of a protracted dispute and controversy.
Treasury spokesperson Phumza Macanda confirmed on Monday: "The National Treasury will submit the report to the Constitutional Court on Tuesday, 28 June 2016, in accordance with the requirements of the Court."
Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng emphasised that the Public Protector's remedial action was binding and President Zuma's compliance was not optional.
Meanwhile, South Africa has started the search for a new Public Protector with Ms Madonsela's term set to end on October 19.
Interviews for the post will be aired live.
The Parliamentary committee responsible for selecting the new Ombudsman has said the public's response has been overwhelming.
Former first lady
Some 72 people have been nominated for the job and that figure was more than double the one MPs had to pick from last time.
They include Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions Willie Hofmeyr, Western Cape High Court Judge Siraj Desai and Deputy Public Protector Kevin Malunga.
Former President Thabo Mbeki and former first lady Graca Machel have also reportedly been nominated, but have told Parliament they were not available to take up the post.
