{UAH} I always felt sorry for Obote and now i am sure

Over the weekend, i read a feature in Sunday Vision on HOW THE DEATH OF OYITE OJOK AFFECTED OBOTE. The same author in the recent past outed another piece under the same banner reviewing HOW OBOTE FELL OUT WITH NYERERE.

In that particular one, there is a part which indicates that Obote was supposed to receive military aid from G Britain around 1984 but he inexplicably turned the offer down. Cecilia Ogwal, who was then asst. Sec Gen of UPC wailed in bewilderment, seeing as power was about to slip from their hands.

Last weekend's piece alluded to how Obote was never the same again when Oyite Ojok perished on Dec 2 1983, at Kasozi. Apparently, men he believed in like Muwanga and even 'holy' Tito celebrated the demise yet almost everybody knew that Oyite was the bulwark of the second UPC regime. In short, Obote only had one man to rely on for his survival. What were the rest doing around him?

I am also aware that NRA didn't win the war because of own strength or sophistication in any way. All they had was an eloquent, plucky leader and a tiger's bravery each. The war was won because of internal weaknesses within the Obote gov't with a tinge of betrayal here and there. At some point the rebound President found himself unable to trust anybody.

Even the Nyereres turned their back on him (over IMF dealings) yet Tanzania itself was to embrace IMF soon after.

So the likes of George Okello should spare us pretences that they were for Obote. How? In what format was their loyalty and usefulness to him? Did they have to be told that if your enemy is armed, you need to be better armed and before you take on the enemy, stitch up your location first? And how come he never took for himself any form of training in defence and security matters, for example?

Obote didn't deserve to lack visionary aides at hand to replace D.O.O. The Okellos (no exception) were in bed with Museveni who is also in some respect short of hands except in his field of nature-the military!

I am pro-Obote and will make sure Akena doesn't relapse to the same lame dynasty of absentee fan bases. He should recover from NRM what was meant for his father.
