Kampala Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago Warns Newly Appointed Kampala
Minister Beti Olive Kamya,
DP Disowns Nakiwala Kiyingi
Following the announcement of the new cabinet by president Museveni on
Monday night that saw at least four opposition ministers; Betty Amongi
(UPC), as Lands Minister, Beti Olive Namisango Kamya (Federal Alliance
Party) as Kampala Capital City Authority Minister, and Rose Nakiwala
(DP) as state Minister for Youth Affairs, a lot of reaction from their
respective parties and opposition has been raining.
The Democratic President (DP) Norbert while addressing the media in
Kampala today said that Rose Nakiwala who contested on the DP ticket
as Kampala Woman MP decided to accept the ministerial post as an
individual. "As DP we were not consulted before our very own was
appointed. We expected government of the ruling NRM party to discuss
with us regarding a joint power sharing," said Mao. 'We didn't second
Nakiwala Kiyingi for that appointment, so she goes in as an individual
and she cannot say she is representing the views of the Democratic
Party," said Mao.
He went on further: "I have left it to Nakiwala to search her heart
and soul and decide according to her conscience; she doesn't go to
cabinet as a DP representative."
Mao said that as Democratic Party, they have not had the best
experience with working with sitting governments and that they don't
intend to repeat their past mistakes.
But on a lighter note, Uganda People's Congress Betty Among (Oyam
Woman Mp) welcomed the appointment saying it was long overdue. "As an
individual, I take the offer but I have written to my party on how
best to handle this appointment," she said in an interview. Amongi
also wife to Jimmy Akena a son of Uganda's former President Apollo
Obote said she welcomed the appointment though she described the
docket given to her (lands) as "very taxing"
But her husband Jimmy Akena, the controversial UPC president said the
issue of appointing Amongi should not be politicized. 'We are all
aware that we are in a transitional period. This period cannot succeed
without Museveni and without the opposition," he said.
Meanwhile just sworn in Kampala Lord Mayor Salongo Erias Lukwago has
warned the newly appointed Kampala Minister, Beti Olive Kamya to "go
slow" on him and avoid frustrating his work. "I am not against her
appointment, but she shouldn't be used to frustrate my efforts. Even
those who have tried have failed," Lukwago told the Investigator.
Kamya on her part revealed that joining the movement government as a
minister doesn't meant that she is now part of NRM. "Being appointed a
minister doesn't defraud me of my personal and independent views as
Beti Kamya. I am still the same person with my divergent views," she
said.
