{UAH} Migingo: The Iron-clad Island RT — Documentary - RT.com

I watched this fascinating documentary on Russia Today last night. I
never knew about this island, but it seems it is in kenyan territory,
while being militarily occupied by Kayibanda's brutal NRA. From what I
watched, which I can't verify, and the facts are disputed, it was a Mr
John Nusbuga from Buganda who first settled on the island, although
some of the current inhabitants say it was a certain Mr Otieno, a Luo
from Nyanza. The mainstay of the economy is fishing, but stocks are
getting depelted and no one is sure how long it will sustain a
population on the siland. The population of mainly Luo and Baganda
seem to get on well with each other, although the life is really very
bleak and primitive almost beyond belief. Mr John Nusbuga, I hope it
is not your good self, owns many of the shacks, which he rents out to
the fishermen and intenerant traders. he also have a number of fishing
boats, and employs a number of locals to work for him. Typical of an
entreprenuerail muganda, he has also built a Catholic church, and was
the economy not so basic and bleak, he would make a good capitalist.
The only problem picked out by the documentary is that many of the
women are unemployed so most resort to the sex trade, some selling
themselves to as many as 9 customers a night, which makes Migingo be
sex capital of Lake Victoria. If you are the John Nsubuga shownon the
documentary, I must admire your inteprid vivacity and ingenuity. May
be thats why you disappear for long spells from UAH- because you have
your portfolio of buusinesses on Migingo island to attend to.
